UniPID -Virtual Studies in International Development

This post is espcially addressed to my fellow students at Haaga-Helia and friends in Finland.

To broaden my horizon and learn more about the players and regulations in international development, I will take some courses of the "UniPID- Finnish University Partnership for International Development" this autumn.

The network has launched a virtual programm in development and sustainability consisting of 25 ECTS that students of certain study programs at universities within the UniPID network can take. Additionally to those students that can take the courses for free, some courses are open to anybody interested. For those people, the 1,5 to 2 month long online-courses cost up to 80€.

Here are some of the courses and links to their descriptions:

If you are not a student of a network university, you cannot sign up for the courses at the UniPID website but for example through the open university network of Finland. If you do not study at a partner university, you might still get the 5 ECTS (per course) accepted as free-choice studies. The registration for most courses starts soon, so if you feel that you still have some "capacities" and are interested in development aid - this is a good opportunity to get closer to an issue I know many of us are intersted in! You are invited to share this post with your friends or people you know may be interested.

One easy way to help..

Just a quick addition:
Am still looking for an easy way to help, I found a great site that has been running since the "World Health Day" and running until the 10th or April 2010.

THAT is easy! Give your name, like on a sign-up list or a petition. You can forward the link with a sample-message to friends but don't have to. There are no requests for money, the main objective is to raise awareness and gather public support!
As the WHO states: "(..) We call on 1 million people to help us tell decision-makers that our hospitals must be made safe from disasters."

Image survey on development aid by the European Comission

As I figured I was not the only one wondering about my opions on development aid and the general perception, I found an intersting report by the European Commision (from 2004) investigating the "Attitudes towards Development Aid".

The underlying objective of this survey on attitudes to development aid is to assess awareness levels and perceptions of the Millennium Development Goals. This survey also aims at examining citizens’ views on governmental aid at the national and European levels. Finally, the objective is to assess the perceived form and consequences of development aid and identify priorities for the EU. (Quote from the report)

Right the first questions aims to find out the awareness levels of the EU's "Millennium
Development Goals". In Finland 16% and 13% in Germany have heard of this agenda.
Another questions wanted to investigate the trust of people in the success of development aid. In both Germany and Finland only 18% believe that the aim of reducing extreme hunger and poverty will be reached by 2015. There were a couple more questions asking for the trust in help with different concerns (gender equlity, education, child mortality, HIV/Aids...) and generally spoken, Germany and Finland in most questions belonged to the 5 most "pessimistic" countries!

One intersting question asked what respondends think is the most pressing issue to tackle in developing countries. The options were:

1) Reduce the possibility of armed conflict and war,
2) Cancel developing countries debts to (our country),
3) Provide training andtechnical expertise to developing countries,
4) Increase development aid to countries commited to poverty reduction to meetinternationally agreed aid targets,
5) Promote more private investments in developing countries,
6) Make sure that developing countries get fairere access to European markets for their agricultural, fishery and textile products,
7) Implement international environment agreements, and "None"

From the EU25, the highest average was given for the 1) option with 32%. As the the question of debt cancelation is rather controverse, the higest rating here came from Italy with 26%. My personal favorite is the "help for self-help" opinion of the Finnish respondents, who gave their "Most-pressing-issue"-vote for option 3)- "Provide training andtechnical expertise to developing countries" . Their 49% is by far the highest of all EU25 states. The second highest percentage for this option is 23% (from Sweden)!

When looking at total numbers (not only one option) - even 9 out of 10 Finns would like their governments to provide training as a part of the help.

Another interesting fact results from the question for the allocated budgets of donor countries (ger.:Gebeländer) for aid in developing countries. In Germany, 22% of the respondends found that the government allocates too big a share of the budget to development aid. In no other EU25 country this number was that high. But it must be noted that in many countries around 40% were unable to give an answer to that question at all. And Germany in 2003 (the year before the survey) spent 0.28% of its GNI (Gross National Income) on development assistance, which is a lot compared to other developed countries!

In my eyes, this missing trust in the success and the administration of project indicates that there is 1) demand for more and well-targeted marketing, transparency and information of the causes of organisations and projects and 2) the necessity to "come closer to the people" with the causes and urgency, especially in the "richer" countries far away from the Third World.

During my web-search I have found a very high number of job offers in development aid compared to commercial industries like tourism or marketing, where I was looking intensely! As mentioned above, most job offers were in specialist professions targeted at experienced jobseekers, but it is a flourishing "business". For me, this has shown that my time as a development aid worker is still some years away (c:

The UN also has (mostly similar) Millenium Goals and this video on youtube shows (with a strange Vanessa Mai background music) as a presentation the different concrete goals and actions to be taken in order to achieve them. Mabye you can find your role and your opportunities to achieve those goals and more.

Unicef Rangliste zur Situation von Kindern in Industrieländern

Nun nehme ich mir mal was vor, was keines meiner Erlebnisse betrifft. Ich habe gerade im BBC gesehen, wie die Rangliste zur Situation von Kindern in europäischen Länden ausgefallen ist.
Es gibt verschiedene Indikatoren, die in Studien so objektiv wie möglich erforscht wurden.

Die Indikatoren beinhalten unter anderem:
- Materiellen Wohlstand
- Gesundheit und Sicherheit
- Bildung und Erziehung
- (wichtig für mein Betrachtung) Familie und Gruppenbeziehungen (eng.: family and peer relationships)

Im BBC wurde, für mich nicht überraschend bekanntgegeben, dass Großbritannien nur auf Rang 24 rangiert, knapp vor Rumänien und hinter Tschechien. Das Land, das Kindern wohl am besten tut, sind die Niederlande! Das wiederum überrascht mich nicht.

Danach folgen immernoch fast alle skandinavischen Länder (im weiteren Sinne -"alle da oben mit einem Kreuz auf der Fahne). Deutschland landet auf Platz 8, was sich für mich fair und richtig anhört. Frankreich auf Platz 11 und sonst finde ich noch keine aktuelle Liste im Internet.

Allerdings habe ich von der Unicef-website einen Bericht aus 2007 gefunden, der sich nicht groß geändert hat.

Ich sehe gerade, dass die Qualität nicht so gut ist. Einfach drauf klicken, dann kommt eine deutlichere Ansicht!
Wie nicht anders zu erwarten wurde in Schweden, Norwegen und Finnland in Sachen familiärer Zusammenhalt leider sehr schlechte Noten vergeben. Das war nach meinen erfahrungen hier nicht anders zu erwarten. Dass alerdings Deutschland auf Platz 13 kam (wie das in der neuen Studie ist weiß ich ja noch nicht) hätte ich sonicht erwartet, besonders nicht im Vergleich mit Finnland! Und, dass besonders in 2006/2007 der materielle Wohlstand in Deutschland für Kidner so schlecht gewesen sein soll, schlechter als Tschechien zum Beispiel ist zwar schwer zu glaube, aber irgendwie vorstellbar. Dafür würde ich gern mal die Kriterien sehen!

In jedem Fall finde ich es aber gut zu wissen (wenn das auch "nur" die Einschätzung der Uicef ist), dass das Wohergehen von Kidnern nicht nur von materiellen Werten und der Erziehung abhängt.

P.S.: Ich habe ja nun schon mit vielen Finnen über Ihr Bildungsystem und Ihre Sicht der Dinge gesprochen- und eine Sache habe ich überraschend festgestellt: KEIN EINZIGER meiner Gesprächspartner kannte die Pisa-Studie! Und nicht weil die hier anders heißt, sondern weil sich hier niemand so recht drum kümmert, oder es publik gemacht wurde...

Da werde ich nochmal nachhaken! Viell. schreibe ich mal einen Bericht von meinen "Interviews" mit Lehramtsstudenten und einfach ehemaligen Schülern (auch von Sami's Waldorfschule) an unseren Lieblings-bildungsministerin Frau Schavan...?!

EARTH HOUR 2009 -Take on your share

Hei there, after having had an unusual attack of self-pitty after not passing the very last exam of my studies and now an oral exam of all that investment/finances ahead- I have recovered and pulled myself together. I have found the best reason to write this blog netry after watching a finnish tv commercial for the "Earth hour". Like to me, it has or would really appeal all of you very much by starting of a lá "I'm just one person, what could I possibly do to maintain our planet?!"

It is a global event/campaign and activity against global warming and it is SO EASY to do your part. WWF calls on to all the people in the world to LEAVE YOUR LIGHTS SIWTCHED OFF on the 28. MARCH for only 1 HOUR between 20:30- 21:30 local times. It will have a big effect, symbolically and on the global energy consumoption!!

Earth Hour on WWF:n organisoima maailmanlaajuinen tapahtuma, jonka aikana ihmiset ja yhteisöt ympäri maailmaa sammuttavat valonsa tunnin ajaksi samana päivänä samaan kellonaikaan. Tapahtuma järjestetään lauantaina 28.3.2009 klo 20.30–21.30. Suomessa tapahtuman suojelijana toimii tasavallan presidentti Tarja Halonen.

So far, 1.189 cities and towns across 80 countries are committed, with more coming on board every day. More than 23.000 businesses and organiations are taking part. In Helsinki, the Johannuksen kirkko, Uspenski cathedral and Kallio church (among others) and FORUM will turn of their lights on the 28th!!

I'd also say that going to bed early or lighting some candles with friends is a really nice alternative.

Earth Hour 2009 - Leistet euren Beitrag!

Hallo nach langer Zeit mal wieder,

ich bin in den letzten Tagen ein wenig in Selbstmitleid zerflossen und musste mich erstmal von dem Schock erholen, dass ich zwar die Matheprüfung geschafft habe, aber die zweite und letzte offene Prüfung meines Studiums- Investition/Finanzierung NICHT. Ich muss also nochmal in eine mündliche Prüfung in 1-2 Monaten! Und ja, Mitleid ist sehr willkommen! Ich habe so hart gelernt und weiß wirklich so genau, wie ich die Prüfung schaffen soll. Aber "wat mut, dat mut"! Nochmal ordentlich Mut sammeln und nochmal lernen...

Nun habe ich einen guten Grund, warum ich diesen Beitrag schreibe. Ich habe gerade im finnischen Fernsehen eine Werbung gesehen für die EARTH HOUR.

Die Botschaft spricht uns wohl alle an - Ich bin ja nur ein Mensch, was kann ich schon tun?! Die vom WWF und anderen Organisationen rund um den Globus initieren diese globale Aktion. Einfach gesagt wird dazu aufgerufen in allen Ländern Menschen dazu zu bewegen, NUR 1 STUNDEN LANG, am 28. MÄRZ VON 20:30- 21:30 das Licht ausgeschaltet zu lassen!!


Dies hat natürlich nicht nur eine starke symbolische Wirkung und ist wirklich nicht so schwer! Die Aktion ist als lokale Initiative wurde vor 2 Jahren in Sydney gestartet. Bislang haben sich mehr als 1500 Städte aus 80 Staaten über 18 Zeitzonen hinweg angemeldet. Mehr als 23.000 (!!) Firmen und Oragnisationen beteiligen sich offiziell an der Aktion. Jeder Einzelne kann also nun was bewirken- man ist Teil des großen Ganzen (c;


Mega-Städte wie Peking, Manila, Mexiko-City, Moskau, Rom und viele andere beteiligen sich am 28. März 2009 an dem Aufruf. In Hong Kong wird das Licht von 300 Hochhäusern für eine Stunde gelöscht. Der Eifel-Turm in Paris, die Alhambra in Grenada, der Zuckerhut von Rio de Janeiro… Symbole der jeweiligen Länder werden für eine Stunde dunkel sein. Hamburg wird mit einem seiner berühmtesten Wahrzeichen dabei sein: Rund um die Binnenalster und das Rathaus werden für eine Stunde die meisten Lichter gelöscht.

Hier in Helsinki und Finnland macht eine ganze Hotelkette mit, viele Kirchen in Helsinki und dass 2. größte Einkaufszentrum in Helsinki "Forum" machen auch mit.
